The NSW War Memorials Register will undergo essential upgrades from 3 July. If you have draft submissions ready, please submit them before 3 July.
This large and decorative timber honour board for the First World War is fixed to a wall inside the Auburn Presbyterian Church, established in 1904. It is expertly made and features two turned columns, supporting an elegantly carved pediment. The names of 53 men from the church who enlisted in the war are printed on the board in gold lettering. The names of the 10 who died in the war are included in the main list in the centre of the board and also grouped in a separate section titled 'At rest'. Their names are accompanied by their dates of death, location, and if they were killed in action or died of wounds.
The roll was made and presented to the church by the Mayor of Rookwood (Lidcombe), Mr William Brown. He was also an engineer/carpenter and a member of the church. It was unveiled on site on 9 December 1917 by the Mayoress, Mrs Brown. At the time of the ceremony, there were only 40 names on the roll. They were printed in the article about the unveiling, published in the Cumberland Argus and Fruitgrowers Advocate on 15 December.
The following year, additional names were added to the board and they were unveiled in a service at the church on 3 November 1919. The names were published in the Cumberland Argus on 9 November.
Note: This memorial is not accessible to the public.
