The NSW War Memorials Register will undergo essential upgrades from 3 July. If you have draft submissions ready, please submit them before 3 July.
This war memorial is an honour board of Queensland maple, with gold painted names of those from Auburn who served in the Second World War. The words 'Honour Roll 1939–1945' are highlighted in red, at the top of the board.
A report on page 3 of The Cumberland Argus and Fruitgrowers Advocate on Wednesday, 29 October 1941, indicated the board was on a table in the Auburn Council Chambers receiving final polish and would "shortly be erected in the vestibule." At that stage, there were more than 400 names on the council's register. Ultimately, the board carried 634 names.
With the demolition of the old council chambers, the roll was moved to the Anzac Room of the Auburn RSL sub-Branch Club in Northumberland Road, Auburn. It was restored in 2004, by inscribing the names on metal sheets and then affixing these sheets to the original board.
All RSL property in Northumberland Road, Auburn, was sold in 2013 and both the sub-Branch and the club vacated the premises on the last day of 2014. The roll is now located in the office of the Cumberland RSL sub-Branch, Unit 7, Ground Floor, 1-5 Harrow Road, Auburn. Also on site is the matching Municipality of Auburn First World War Honour Roll.
