Description

The memorial is a bronze plaque dedicated to the 1st Battalion of the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.). It features the colours of the 1st Battalion, as well as the Australian Commonwealth Military Forces insignia. The plaque was designed by the First Battalion Association and Tweed Shire Council. It was dedicated by the association on 17 October 2009.

The memorial is located along the Tweed Heads Memorial Walkway in Chris Cunningham Park. It is attached to a lattice frame, set within a garden bed. It is one of a number of plaques commemorating Australian military units and organisations positioned throughout the area.

The 1st Battalion was the first infantry unit recruited for the A.I.F. in NSW during the First World War. It was raised in 1914 and arrived in Egypt on 2 December. It took part in the landing at Gallipoli in Turkey on 25 April 1915. The battalion returned to Egypt, and in March 1916, sailed for France and the Western Front. They continued operations until late September 1918. Between November 1918 and May 1919, the battalion returned to Australia for demobilisation and discharge.

Chris Cunningham Park is a site of Anzac Day and other commemorative services.
