Tweed Heads 4th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment Memorial Plaque
Description
The memorial is a bronze plaque commemorating those who served and fell from the 4th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment. It was dedicated on 1 February 2011.
The memorial is located along the Tweed Heads Memorial Walkway in Chris Cunningham Park. It is attached to a lattice frame, set within a garden bed. It is one of a number of plaques commemorating Australian military units and organisations positioned throughout the area.
Excerpt from the Australian War Memorial:
4th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (4RAR) was raised at Woodside on 1 February 1964. The first regular infantry to be raised in Australia, 4RAR served in Malaysia as part of the Far East Strategic Reserve from August 1965 to September 1967. Upon its return the battalion began training for service in Vietnam.
... [4RAR] was the last Australian battalion to leave Vietnam. On 7 November 1971 it withdrew from Nui Dat to Vung Tau, before departing for Australia on 8 December.
The battalion was renamed the 2nd Commando Regiment on 19 June 2009.
Chris Cunningham Park is a site of Anzac Day and other commemorative services.
